Finding the Joy in Creating

Sometimes life just moves. We wake up, rush through our day, juggle errands and responsibilities, and before we know it….it’s time to start all over again. We can get so caught up in the rhythm of go, go, go that we forget to stop and appreciate the simple moments where joy lives.

For me lately, that joy has come from baking! I especially love it on slow Sunday mornings. Baking has taught me that creativity can be grounded, soothing, and delicious. It can be a sensory experience that invites us to slow down and show up. I enjoy creating through music and art, but this is another way to fill my cup up and the bellies of my loved ones.

There’s something especially grounding about baking. The simple rhythm of measuring, mixing, waiting, and watching something come together. It engages your senses in a way that gently pulls you into the present moment: the smell of vanilla, the warmth of the oven, the quiet focus of following each step. Baking isn’t about perfection or productivity! It’s about slowing down and allowing yourself to enjoy the process of creating something with your hands. And this isn’t just a feeling many of us share and research supports it. Studies show that engaging in small, everyday creative activities like cooking or baking can have a real impact on emotional well-being, helping people feel calmer, happier, and more fulfilled in their daily lives.

“A study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who engaged in small, everyday creative activities—such as cooking or baking—reported feeling more relaxed and happier in their daily lives, and even experienced a greater sense of flourishing.”

Creativity is an important part of life. It is a part that during our chaos we sometimes neglect. Whether you bake, paint, journal, garden, play music, or dance in your living room, creating is a way of slowing down, feeling present, and reconnecting with your own heartbeat.

So this Sunday, whether it’s cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, sourdough bread, doodles, or brushstrokes,  let your creative act be something that fills your cup. And let yourself enjoy the process, not because you’re being productive, but because it feels good.

Why This Matters

In our busy lives it’s easy to treat joy like something we’ll get to one day… “after everything is done.” But joy isn’t a reward you get after the marathon of life. It’s woven into the tiny moments: the laugh while stirring batter, the swirl of icing, the first brushstroke on a blank canvas. These little moments remind us that life doesn’t have to just happen to us. We can taste it, feel it, smell it, and yes — bake it into existence.

Quick Tips to Bring More Creative Joy Into Your Week

Schedule it in -Put a creative block on your calendar (yes, like an appointment). Treat it like meeting a friend.
🍰 Start small -Not every project needs to be a masterpiece. A single cookie or quick sketch is still a creation.
🎶 Make it your vibe– Put on music that makes your heart light while you create.
📵 Unplug while you make– Put the phone down, feel the textures, breathe deeply and let your senses do the work.
🤝 Share the joy -Bring your baked goods (or art!) to neighbors, family, or friends because connection fuels creativity. Or ask your family to help you create together!
🌱 Celebrate the mess – Creativity isn’t perfect. Pleasures are often found in the process, not just the picture-perfect end result.
