Organizing Your Week When Life Feels Like Chaos (ADHD Edition)

I’ll be honest: organization doesn’t come naturally to me. Between two kids, both my husband and I working, plus extra work projects after hours, kids’ extracurriculars, doctor’s appointments, and the endless little things that pop up, it’s a miracle anything gets done.

This school year, my husband and I started a digital calendar on our phones. We share it so we can both see everything, cheer practice, musical theater rehearsals, golf lessons, work meetings, you name it. I set reminders, I put things in the app… and yet, my ADHD brain still managed to ignore alerts, get overwhelmed, and sometimes completely forget.

The game-changer for me? A simple Sunday ritual.

For the past two weeks, I’ve been sitting down on Sunday with my calendar that doubles as my journal. I take just a few minutes to write out everything I have for the week. You might think, “But it’s already in your phone…why write it again?” And that’s exactly it. Writing it down is more than double work, it’s mental reinforcement.

Seeing my week in writing, in addition to my digital calendar, keeps it on my radar. When I do my morning journaling (more on that in a future post), I see my week laid out in front of me. That tiny action of writing things down has done wonders for my memory, focus, and overall stress. It helps us know on Sunday who needs to help pick up the kids or get them to their activities and what nights we will actually be home for dinner.

Now, everything, work stuff, home stuff, kids’ schedules, lives in the same digital calendar, but the simple act of handwriting it into my journal keeps it real for me. It’s visible in multiple places, and somehow that repetition keeps me on track, even on the chaotic days.

Maybe you already do this, but just maybe someone could benefit from this. Like this 39 year old chaos coordinator.

Benefits of a Weekly Calendar Check-In

  • Mental clarity: Seeing your week laid out reduces the “what did I forget?” panic.
  • Less overwhelm: Breaking your week down into concrete items makes chaos feel manageable.
  • Reinforced memory: Writing it down in addition to digital reminders helps your ADHD brain actually remember what’s coming up.
  • Shared awareness: For couples or families, seeing everything together helps everyone stay on the same page.

Your Weekly Challenge
Try this for just two weeks:

  1. Set aside 5–10 minutes on Sunday.
  2. Open your digital calendar and your journal.
  3. Write down every event, appointment, or task you have for the week, no matter how small.
  4. Keep your journal somewhere you see in the morning.
  5. Notice how it changes your week,do you feel more prepared? Less overwhelmed? More in control?

Organization doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, repeatable habits, like a Sunday calendar check-in, can make the chaos of life feel a little more manageable.
